Isomonodromic deformations of connections with singularities of parahoric formal type
In previous work, the authors have developed a geometric theory of
fundamental strata to study connections on the projective line with irregular
singularities of parahoric formal type. In this paper, the moduli space of
connections that contain regular fundamental strata with fixed combinatorics at
each singular point is constructed as a smooth Poisson reduction. The authors
then explicitly compute the isomonodromy equations as an integrable system.
This result generalizes work of Jimbo, Miwa, and Ueno to connections whose
singularities have parahoric formal type.Comment: 32 pages. One of the main theorems (Theorem 5.1) has been
significantly strengthened. It now states that the isomonodromy equations
give rise to an integrable system on the moduli space of framed connections
with fixed combinatorics instead of only on a principal GL_n bundle over this

Masses, luminosities and dynamics of galactic molecular clouds
Star formation in galaxies takes place in molecular clouds and the Milky Way is the only galaxy in which it is possible to resolve and study the physical properties and star formation activity of individual clouds. The masses, luminosities, dynamics, and distribution of molecular clouds, primarily giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way are described and analyzed. The observational data sets are the Massachusetts-Stony Brook CO Galactic Plane Survey and the IRAS far IR images. The molecular mass and infrared luminosities of glactic clouds are then compared with the molecular mass and infrared luminosities of external galaxies

This guidebook describes the characteristics and interrelationships of Archean greenstone-granite and high-grade gneiss terrains of the Superior Province. A 300-km long west to east transect between Wawa and Timmins, Ontario will be used to illustrate regional-scale relationships. The major geological features of the Superior Province are described
The Nature of Nearby Counterparts to Intermediate Redshift Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies II. CO Observations
We present the results of a single-dish beam-matched survey of the three
lowest rotational transitions of CO in a sample of 20 local (D < 70 Mpc)
Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs). These ~L*, blue, high surface
brightness, starbursting galaxies were selected with the same criteria used to
define LCBGs at higher redshifts. Our detection rate was 70%, with those
galaxies having Lblue<7e9 Lsun no detected. We find the H2 masses of local
LCBGs range from 6.6e6 to 2.7e9 Msun, assuming a Galactic CO-to-H2 conversion
factor. Combining these results with our earlier HI survey of the same sample,
we find that the ratio of molecular to atomic gas mass is low, typically 5-10%.
Using a Large Velocity Gradient model, we find that the average gas conditions
of the entire ISM in local LCBGs are similar to those found in the centers of
star forming regions in our Galaxy, and nuclear regions of other galaxies. Star
formation rates, determined from IRAS fluxes, are a few solar masses per year,
much higher per unit dynamical mass than normal spirals. If this rate remains
constant, the molecular hydrogen depletion time scales are short, 10-200 Myr.Comment: accepted for publication in the ApJ (vol 625
Dust-to-Gas Ratio and Metallicity in Dwarf Galaxies
We examine the dust-to-gas ratio as a function of metallicity for dwarf
galaxies [dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs) and blue compact dwarf galaxies
(BCDGs)]. Using a one-zone model and adopting the instantaneous recycling
approximation, we prepare a set of basic equations which describes processes of
dust formation and destruction in a galaxy. Four terms are included for the
processes: dust formation from heavy elements ejected by stellar mass loss,
dust destruction in supernova remnants, dust destruction in star-forming
regions, and accretion of heavy elements onto preexisting dust grains. Solving
the equations, we compare the result with observational data of nearby dIrrs
and BCDGs. The solution is consistent with the data within the reasonable
ranges of model parameters constrained by the previous examinations. This means
that the model is successful in understanding the dust amount of nearby
galaxies. We also show that the accretion rate of heavy element onto
preexisting dust grains is less effective than the condensation of heavy

Cobimetinib and trametinib inhibit platelet MEK but do not cause platelet dysfunction
The MEK inhibitors cobimetinib and trametinib are used in combination with BRAF inhibitors to treat metastatic melanoma but increase rates of hemorrhage relative to BRAF inhibitors alone. Platelets express several members of the MAPK signalling cascade including MEK1 and MEK2 and ERK1 and ERK2 but their role in platelet function and haemostasis is ambiguous as previous reports have been contradictory. It is therefore unclear if MEK inhibitors might be causing platelet dysfunction and contributing to increased hemorrhage. In the present study we performed pharmacological characterisation of cobimetinib and trametinib in vitro to investigate potential for MEK inhibitors to cause platelet dysfunction.
We report that whilst both cobimetinib and trametinib are potent inhibitors of platelet MEK activity, treatment with trametinib did not alter platelet function. Treatment with cobimetinib results in inhibition of platelet aggregation, integrin activation, alpha-granule secretion and adhesion but only at suprapharmacological concentrations. We identified that the inhibitory effects of high concentrations of cobimetinib are associated with off-target inhibition on Akt and PKC. Neither inhibitor caused any alteration in thrombus formation on collagen under flow conditions in vitro.
Our findings demonstrate that platelets are able to function normally when MEK activity is fully inhibited, indicating MEK activity is dispensable for normal platelet function. We conclude that the MEK inhibitors cobimetinib and trametinib do not induce platelet dysfunction and are therefore unlikely to contribute to increased incidence of bleeding reported during MEK inhibitor therapy
Coherence of Nitrogen-Vacancy Electronic Spin Ensembles in Diamond
We present an experimental and theoretical study of electronic spin
decoherence in ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in bulk
high-purity diamond at room temperature. Under appropriate conditions, we find
ensemble NV spin coherence times (T_2) comparable to that of single NVs, with
T_2 > 600 microseconds for a sample with natural abundance of 13C and
paramagnetic impurity density ~10^15 cm^(-3). We also observe a sharp decrease
of the coherence time with misalignment of the static magnetic field relative
to the NV electronic spin axis, consistent with theoretical modeling of NV
coupling to a 13C nuclear spin bath. The long coherence times and increased
signal-to-noise provided by room-temperature NV ensembles will aid many
applications of NV centers in precision magnetometry and quantum information.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; v2 minor correction
The Cool ISM in S0 Galaxies. I. A Survey of Molecular Gas
Lenticular galaxies remain remarkably mysterious as a class. Observations to
date have not led to any broad consensus about their origins, properties and
evolution, though they are often thought to have formed in one big burst of
star formation early in the history of the Universe, and to have evolved
relatively passively since then. In that picture, current theory predicts that
stellar evolution returns substantial quantities of gas to the interstellar
medium; most is ejected from the galaxy, but significant amounts of cool gas
might be retained. Past searches for that material, though, have provided
unclear results. We present results from a survey of molecular gas in a
volume-limited sample of field S0 galaxies, selected from the Nearby Galaxies
Catalog. CO emission is detected from 78 percent of the sample galaxies. We
find that the molecular gas is almost always located inside the central few
kiloparses of a lenticular galaxy, meaning that in general it is more centrally
concentrated than in spirals. We combine our data with HI observations from the
literature to determine the total masses of cool and cold gas. Curiously, we
find that, across a wide range of luminosity, the most gas rich galaxies have
about 10 percent of the total amount of gas ever returned by their stars. That
result is difficult to understand within the context of either monolithic or
